AFGHANISTAN NOMADIC RUGS:
Atlanta, GA. My first gig. I was the helper of Tamar. He opened rugs to sell to Betty Buckhead. I folded them back up. It was the summer before ninth grade and I made like six bucks an hour and ate lunch daily at Henri's bakery. I remember their sandwiches were always slathered with mayonnaise and I remember scraping it off daily. But I kept coming back. Daily.
ICE CREAM MAN:
Atlanta, GA. Summer after freshman year of college. We answered a want ad in the paper that said "Need a Tan? Want a job?" Hell yes I do. So we went to the address and the parking lot was full of ice cream trucks. All you could eat...for full price. I got sent to Lithonia. We had to pay for our own gas so by the time the second week came around I had gained 5 pounds spent more on my AMEX card than I had taken home in cash. I did eat the fuck out of some triple stage bomb pops though.
HOUSKEEPER:
Gustavus, AK. Summer after sophomore year of college. Heads and Beds. It was neat to see porcupines waddle in front of me as I threw soiled old lady sheets into the hampers. This was a defining time for me. I was transferring to Emory after the summer, I dabbled in many new things, 8 of my co-workers were killed in a plane crash that me and my high-school friends were supposed to be on and my cousin Mike was in an almost fatal car crash. Mike is ok today but at the time we didn't know and it is the closest to tragedy my family has had to endure. Alaska will always have a special place in my heart.
KITCHEN MANAGER, The Silver Dollar Pizza Kitchen
Portland, OR. I moved to Portland after a stint in Bar Harbor, ME to start my "career." I spent three wonderful years here. I walked into the kitchen on my first shift and a jolly man named Kal picked up the phone as I walked in and remarked to the caller, "Don't you know anyone else in this town that sells weed?" This was at 9:45am on a Monday. This was home base for several relationships, finding my passion in videography, and discovering who I would later become and love. I will always love Portland.
